This double bill is a twist on pantsula – a bold and energetic dance that emerged during the apartheid era – and incorporates tap, step and gumboot. In førm Inførms, Portuguese choreographer Marco da Silva Ferreira explores the collective identity of this dance style blending pantsula, house dance and other street dance styles into a cocktail of pulsating energy.

In Emaphakathini, Franco-Senegalese choreographer Amala Dianor draws on the personal histories of the performers to break down boundaries between people and dance traditions. The aim is to create a new shared, transformative space – an “in-between space”, or Emaphakathini in Zulu – where diverse movement vocabularies can coexist and thrive.

The result of this creative exchange is a feast of rousing rhythms and movement. The dancers’ infectious spirit pulses with the heartbeat of the townships, igniting a powerful connection between audience and performers.
