Organised by calendar seasons, the first phase of this project, Spring... As If Trying Not To Own The Earth, involved two residencies – one focused on Growing, the other on Eating. The result of these residencies will take the form of two livestreamed films which are presented as part of Dublin Dance Festival and Age & Opportunity’s Bealtaine Festival.
In this film focused on Growing, we follow the journey dance artist Rita Marcalo took with Carmel Ennis, a Dublin-based gardener. They explored together and shared experiences and knowledge, Rita teaching and sharing movement and dance, and in return gaining a greater understanding about food and sustainable growing practices from Carmel.
Examining our connection with nature, and our role within our food system and the wider context of climate justice, the project highlights a need to reconnect with our bodies and with the Earth in a sustainable way.

An Instant Dissidence production.
Directed by Rita Marcalo, Instant Dissidence is a socially engaged and ecologically engaged company in the expanded field of dance and, more broadly, body-based practices. It foregrounds the role that dance/choreography can play as a social engine: we are ‘artivists’ who believes in the power of connecting art and social consciousness. Instant Dissidence also resists the idea of art as an object produced by a special kind of person called the ‘artist’. Instead, its work is co-created in dialogue with (and at times performed by) non-professional artists, and is about issues which matter to them.

Carmel Ennis
Carmel believes in creating communities among plants as well as among people. Trained in social science and shaped by the lands of Athy and the living culture of Copenhagen where she lived for many years, she is now a practicing gardener living in Dublin. Her gardening manifesto is 'not everything that is sown or planted survives'. Keep it light. Don't overly disturb soil, as this is home to many organisms and insects. Don't overburden other species with our good intentions. Keep hoping. Carmel's pandemic secret has been singing online with the International Song Group of Upstate Theatre Project led by Farah Elle and Caroline Moreau and with the Sean Nós apprentices of Eithne Ní Chatháin aka Inni - K. Although Carmel is not a professional dancer, she loves performance, theatre and dance, and has performed live with Kitt Johnson in Denmark, Forum Humanum, Louise White in Dublin, Mother You, Upstate Theatre Project in Drogheda, The Immortals and Urban Oratario, CoisceimBroadreach/Anu 38 Women.
