At its best, critical writing on dance seeks to illuminate, interpret and interrogate dance performance, with the critic serving as a mediator between dance artists and the audience. At this panel discussion, leading dance critics from Europe, the US and Britain will discuss emerging questions and issues in the field: does dance criticism reflect the increasingly diverse multi-media and interdisciplinary currents of contemporary dance? Would a background in visual art or film criticism be as useful for the aspiring dance writer as the more traditional foundation in text-based artforms? As print outlets for publishing dance criticism diminish, how can dance critics make the most of the opportunities presented by online media?
These and many other topics will be addressed by our international panel and debated with the audience, chaired by Michael Seaver, Dance Critic with The Irish Times and regular contributor to Irish Theatre Magazine, among other publications.
