Merce Cunningham: A Lifetime of Dance offers a fascinating overview of the life and work of Merce Cunningham (1919-2009), one of the most iconic and influential figures in modern dance.  Filmmaker Charles Atlas, a long-time Cunningham collaborator, traces a more than 80-year period, from the choreographer’s early partnership with composer John Cage through to the Merce Cunningham Dance Company’s premiere of BIPED (1999), a dance that pioneered the use of motion capture technology.  In addition to showing rare historical footage and performance excerpts, the film also features interviews with many of Cunningham’s notable collaborators including visual artist Robert Rauschenberg, dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov, and composer Gavin Bryars.  The film was shown as part of the PBS American Masters series, and won the Best Documentary Award at the IMZ Dance Screen 2000 Festival in Monaco.
