Laura Taler’s the village trilogy (1995) 24 mins
Choreographer Laura Taler’s directorial debut features José Navas as a dancer and alludes to the millions of people uprooted through emigration in the past century, while exploring ideas of home and family. Employing the physical characteristics of early cinema, Taler and her dancers capture a time and place that is beyond our grasp, but not beyond our memory. the village trilogy won the Cinedance Award at Moving Pictures 1995; Best Experimental Film at Toronto Worldwide Short Film Festival 1996 and a Gold Hugo for Short Subject Experimental at Chicago International Film Festival 1996.
Laura Taler’s Perpetual Motion (2001) 48 mins
Dancer/choreographer José Navas’ exotic sensuality contrasts with cellist Walter Haman’s contained rigor in this tale of passion and intense collaboration. After a brief love affair ends, this passionate duo faces the challenge of creating an original performance inspired by the music of Zoltan Kodaly, Alan Hovhaness and Benjamin Britten. Made with discretion and compassion, Laura Taler’s documentary chronicles Haman and Navas in a moving and intimate dialogue over six months that sees two virtuoso performers testing the boundaries of their craft and the truth of their relationship. Perpetual Motion was nominated for a Gemini Award by the Academy of Canadian Film & Television.
Philippe Baylaucq’s Lodela (1996) 26 mins
Inspired by the myths of the afterlife, this allegorical dance piece illuminates the soul’s quest by exploring movement and the human body in new and astonishing ways. This film without words is an evocation of the origins of the world. A hymn to the beauty of the human form. A celebration of movement. A metaphor for life and death. Performed by José Navas and Chi Long.
José Navas’ intimate solo Miniatures enthralled audiences and critics alike at DDF 2009 and was described by Michael Seaver of The Irish Times as “a slow-carb release of beautiful, eloquent movement that still satisfies and lingers in the memory.”
This FREE event has been made possible thanks to the Québec Government Office, London.
