Mark Morris Dance Group’s The Hard Nut is coming to town!

Date: Sunday, November 29
Time: 4 pm
Venue: Light House Cinema, Smithfield
Tickets: €7.50 / €6
As a festive treat, before we all get overwhelmed by mince pies and shopping, join us for a special screening of Mark Morris Dance Group’s The Hard Nut (1991). Using Tchaikovsky’s full score, this is The Nutcracker à la Mark Morris! With choreography every bit as dazzling as Petipa’s original, Morris succeeds in remodelling this well-loved Christmas ballet in outrageous and hilarious style. Guaranteed to lift your spirits, The Hard Nut takes a fresh view on timeless characters and, armed with copious amounts of glitter, pays loving and witty homage to a classic tale.
The intricacies of Tchaikovsky’s score become a sumptuous playground for Morris’s seemingly endless display of creativity and the masterful dancing of the cast. This production was based on comic book artist Charles Burns’ reimagining of E.T.A. Hoffman’s The Nutcracker and the Mouse King and evokes both the kitschy and more sinister elements of American pop culture. The Hard Nut will leave you laughing breathlessly one moment and with a lump in your throat the next. Regarded as “an new old chestnut” by the San Francisco Chronicle, it has won the Ovation TV Viewers’ Choice Award for Best Nutcracker on Film the last two years running.
