Dance on Film
returns to Light House Cinema on Sunday, October 18.  This month we’ll be featuring three films by Thierry de Mey, whose work was celebrated during the 2004 Festival.  A renowned filmmaker, visual artist and composer, de Mey has shared in the Artistic Direction of Charleroi/Danses since 2005.

Programme:
Love Sonnets (1994) | 29 mins
Musique de Tables (1999) | 8 mins
One Flat Thing, Reproduced
(2006) | 35 mins

Choreographed by his sister, Michèle Anne de Mey, Love Sonnets is a film about love and about dance. An energetic cast dance seven sonnets in an arid, dusty landscape; sonnets whose rhythms embrace Scarlatti’s sonatas for harpsichord and traditional songs from Southern Italy.

In Musique de Tables, de Mey sets out to explore the fine line between music and movement that produces sound, to tread the border between music and dance. With just a table each as an instrument, three percussionists build a rich tapestry of sound based on a score of prescribed hand and finger positions and movements.

Finally, One Flat Thing, Reproduced is a filmed version of William Forsythe’s choreography, previously mounted as a stage work.  Described by some as “William Forsythe’s Olympics”, One Flat Thing, Reproduced sees the Forsythe Company dance on, under, around and through twenty tables. The complex layers of this choreography are translated into film by de Mey, giving us a subjective perspective on the gathering, rushing momentum of this work.
