Join us for a chilled out Sunday afternoon featuring a triple bill of Irish dance films, in association with Light House Cinema.

Three + 1 (2008) | Fearghus Ó Conchúir & James Kelly | 18 mins

Shakram Dance Company performed in Re-Presenting Ireland in 2008 and DDF will screen their site specific dance film Frozen, choreographed by Mairéad Vaughan with music composed by Dara O’Brien.  Set on the streets of Dublin and in the Garden of Remembrance, Frozen poses the dilemma of reconciling Ireland old and new. By juxtaposing Ireland’s iconic and historical past with today’s rapidly evolving culture, Frozen questions the relationship between myth and modernity.

Shakram Dance Company was founded in 1999 by choreographer Mairéad Vaughan and composer Dara O’Brien.  Their work is frequently multi-disciplinary, featuring live music, interactive sound, film, theatre and site-specific performances. Find out more about Shakram Dance Company here.

Having performed at Re-Presenting Ireland in 2009, junk ensemble display some unusual abilities in their engaging short film Box of Two, which plays with gravity in a confined space. Box of Two was directed by Brokentalkers.

Co-Artistic Directors Megan and Jessica Kennedy are committed to creating innovative and gutsy pieces of dance theatre. Since founding junk ensemble in 2004, their works have toured nationally and internationally. Find out more about junk ensemble here.

Rounding off the programme, Fearghus Ó Conchuir and James Kelly’s Three + 1 is another site specific work. On waste ground near Sherrif Street, four international dancers embody the spirit of a changing city. Like Dubliners old and new, they adapt to changed circumstances in a choreography that is as tough, quirky and unexpectedly beautiful as the city itself.

This film was created during Fearghus Ó Conchuir’s term as Dance Artist in Residence with Dublin City Council in 2007/2008. Based on his stage work, Niche, Three + 1 was conceived as a collaborative venture between Fearghus Ó Conchuir, an independent choreographer with a reputation for bringing dance to unusual places, and James Kelly of Feenish productions, an independent film maker whose approach to film making has been greatly influenced by his work in theatre and dance. Find out more about the project here.

The production of these film was supported by the Arts Council and Dublin City Council.

Following the screening, there will be an informal Q&A with James Kelly and Megan and Jessica Kennedy.
